Padres Fall Short Again as Cardinals' Pallante Dominates on the Mound
In a repeat of the previous evening, the San Diego Padres struggled offensively against the St. Louis Cardinals, losing 3-2 on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium. Center fielder Jackson Merrill made a notable defensive play, sliding to catch a line drive from Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn during the third inning, but the Padres were consistently on the back foot against St. Louis starter Andre Pallante.
Pallante delivered an impressive performance, going seven innings without allowing a walk and striking out six batters. The Padres (37-35) found themselves trailing after the second inning, when St. Louis (40-31) scored two runs, courtesy of Blaze Jordan's double and Nathan Church's single. The Padres managed to get on the scoreboard with RBI singles from Ty France and Merrill, yet they were unable to overcome the deficit.
Starting pitcher Michael King faced challenges early on, allowing three lead-off runners to reach base and struggling to limit the damage during key moments. He concluded his outing after 4 1/3 innings, having allowed three runs on five hits and walking three batters, marking just the second time this season he failed to complete five innings.
Fernando Tatis Jr. kept his hitting streak alive, reaching base for the 11th consecutive game, and ignited a sixth-inning rally with a single. Merrill later capitalized on this momentum with the Padres' first extra-base hit of the series, a double that brought Tatis home and narrowed the gap to one run. However, the Padres' offense faltered in the eighth inning, as they were unable to capitalize further against reliever Ryne Stanek.
Pallante's standout performance secured him his eighth win of the season, contributing to the Cardinals' strong position in the standings. The Padres have yet to announce a starter for the series finale, while the Cardinals will send right-hander Kyle Leahy to the mound, who has not lost a game since April 22. The final game of the series is set to begin at 11:15 a.m. PT.
