Panthers' James Mitchell and LaBryan Ray Face Challenges Ahead of Training Camp

As the Carolina Panthers prepare for their upcoming training camp, two returning players are bracing for a competitive fight to secure their positions on the 53-man roster. Coach Dave Canales recently allowed players to kick off their summer break early by canceling Thursday's final mandatory minicamp practice, but for tight end James Mitchell and defensive lineman LaBryan Ray, the off-season is far from relaxing.

Mitchell, who was overlooked during both the free agency period and the NFL Draft by general manager Dan Morgan, finds himself in a tight competition for playing time. The tight end depth chart features Tommy Tremble, Ja'Tavion Sanders, and Mitchell Evans, alongside Mitchell himself. Sanders noted the camaraderie within the tight end group, stating, "Honestly, anyone can have a breakout year. Anytime anyone steps out on the field, there is no drop off." With Tremble and Sanders leading the way, Mitchell may have to prove his worth to carve out a role.

On the defensive side, LaBryan Ray has been a backup for the majority of his four-year career but stepped into a more significant role last season, starting nine games and recording his first NFL sack. With Tershawn Wharton sidelined due to a neck injury, Ray could transition from defensive end to nose tackle in the Panthers’ 3-4 scheme. However, he faces stiff competition from Bobby Brown III, Cam Jackson, and rookie Lee Hunter, all vying for spots ahead of him on the depth chart. Ray will need to deliver strong performances during preseason if he hopes to maintain his position.

As the Panthers gear up for training camp, the stakes are high for Mitchell and Ray, who both face the pressure of proving their value to the team.
