Patriots Finally Acquire A.J. Brown After Years of Pursuit

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — When a star player is on the market, Eliot Wolf knows it's his responsibility to make the call. Reflecting from his office, the Patriots' personnel director admitted, “I call and I get laughed at. That’s just a normal part of a process.” For two years, he reached out to the Philadelphia Eagles regarding A.J. Brown, only to face skepticism. However, during the NFL scouting combine in February, the conversation shifted for the first time.

After a few months and leveraging a league accounting deadline favorable to the Eagles, the Patriots made a significant move on Monday. They traded their 2028 first-round draft pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick to acquire the three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, whom head coach Mike Vrabel had previously drafted and coached in Tennessee. Now reunited, Brown is set to adapt to a new system under Vrabel’s guidance.

As the Patriots begin to integrate Brown into their offensive strategy, he expressed enthusiasm on his first day at the team facility. “He’s given me a whole bunch of ideas,” Brown shared about his new offensive coordinator, while coaches praised his quick learning and willingness to grasp new concepts. On Tuesday, Brown participated in his first organized team activities, engaging in individual drills, running sprints, and even joining the first-team rotation.

Coming off a tumultuous final season with the Eagles, which included tension with quarterback Jalen Hurts, Brown seems ready to move forward. In a recent interview, he acknowledged their differences but emphasized his respect for Hurts. On Tuesday, he focused on his new team, impressed by the skills of quarterback Drake Maye. “When I heard that, I was like, ‘Wow. That was impressive,’” Brown remarked about Maye’s leadership during a team meeting.

Brown's availability raised questions, particularly regarding a degenerative knee condition. Despite this concern, he has maintained a strong record, playing in at least 13 games each season. Wolf noted, “It’s a factor, but we examined him. Our training staff and medical staff signed off on it.” Still, Brown is keen to earn the respect of his new teammates, opting not to lead stretches during practice.

As he begins to work with the Patriots, Brown received guidance from Vrabel and receivers coach Todd Downing, who has familiarity with him from their time in Tennessee. With expectations high, Brown's ability to adapt will be crucial as he aims to bolster the Patriots' offensive options.
