Paul DePodesta Offers Insights on Rockies' Current Status

Paul DePodesta, the president of baseball operations for the Colorado Rockies, recently shared his thoughts on the team's situation during a spring training media session. Following a previous discussion about prospects, DePodesta expanded on various topics, including pitching and hitting strategies, while acknowledging the unique challenges faced at Coors Field.

Focusing on the pitching staff, DePodesta expressed confidence in Kyle Freeland and Michael Lorenzen. "We have a lot of belief in those guys, and we’re sticking with them," he stated. He emphasized the importance of their prior success, despite current struggles, noting, "We know it’s going to better at some stretch." He highlighted Lorenzen's strong pitching abilities and Freeland's competitiveness, assuring fans that the team will support them through this challenging phase.

Addressing the depth of the pitching rotation, DePodesta admitted the team had not anticipated the number of injuries that have occurred. He acknowledged that while there are some prospects in Triple-A, the organization is still working to develop enough prepared pitchers to fill necessary roles as they head deeper into the season.

When asked about the challenges of playing baseball at high altitude, DePodesta shared that he had been well-prepared for the difficulties, particularly regarding player recovery. He praised the performance of the Rockies' position players on recent road trips, noting their improvement in scoring runs. He credited the coaching staff for their efforts in enhancing players' plate discipline, which has contributed to the team's success.

DePodesta emphasized the need for a balanced offensive approach, combining both home runs and walks, reminiscent of the successful Blake Street Bombers era. He acknowledged that while power is important, foundational skills like plate discipline must be developed across all levels of the organization to improve performance against competitors.
