Penguins Struggle with Attendance Amid Playoff Run; Coaching Changes Loom

The Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins are making a run in the Eastern Conference Final, yet their attendance figures tell a different story. In the first playoff game, attendance fell below 3,500, while the second game only attracted just over 5,000 fans. Factors such as mid-week scheduling in a league that typically benefits from weekend games contribute to these disappointing numbers, but the Penguins' struggle to fill the 8,300-seat Mohegan Sun Arena is particularly concerning at this stage of the playoffs.

Experts suggest that many of the attendance issues can be traced back to the team's own strategies. If the Penguins allocate the necessary resources, they could cultivate a more robust fanbase. Current marketing efforts seem insufficient; casual hockey fans passing through Wilkes-Barre might not even realize a team exists in the area. The lack of visible branding—such as signs and fan apparel—leaves the Penguins feeling almost invisible in the AHL landscape.

Media engagement also appears to be lacking, with the Penguins offering one of the least accommodating setups for reporters in the league. This can lead to less coverage and awareness among potential fans. In contrast, teams like Hershey, which prioritize media relations, enjoy greater visibility and fan engagement.

Additionally, the Mohegan Sun Arena has been criticized for its poor infrastructure, with subpar seating and inadequate sightlines. Some fans have expressed dissatisfaction with their experience, feeling that their money could be better spent elsewhere, despite the affordable ticket prices. Promotional efforts have been limited to a single giveaway of noisemakers throughout the playoffs, which doesn’t match the variety seen with other teams.

Furthermore, the arena's location is a disadvantage, situated amid shopping centers rather than in a vibrant downtown area. As a result, attracting fans from nearby locations becomes more difficult, especially given that Wilkes-Barre is a relatively small market compared to other AHL cities. With a population of around 40,000, it competes for attention against the Philadelphia Flyers and their AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, which are more appealing to local fans.
