PGA Tour Bid Farewell to Rocket Classic After Eight-Year Run
The PGA Tour is set to say goodbye to the Rocket Classic, a tournament that has called Detroit home for the past eight years. On Tuesday, tournament director Mark Hollis announced that the event will conclude after this year's edition, making 2026 its final appearance on the Tour calendar. “After nearly 13 years as a PGA Tour title sponsor, including eight years in Detroit, 2026 will mark the final Rocket Classic,” Hollis said in a statement reported by Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press.
The Rocket Classic, formerly known as the Rocket Mortgage Classic, will take place once more in late July before its departure. Rocket Mortgage has opted not to extend its sponsorship for 2027, as noted by Tony Paul from the Detroit News. This decision comes amid a trend of declining player participation, with top golfers often absent as they return from summer tournaments like the Open Championship and prepare for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
This development marks the first significant change amid anticipated adjustments to the PGA Tour’s schedule for 2027 and beyond. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp is expected to address the new “two track” schedule soon, which aims to create a more organized season-long competition with a focus on higher payouts and elevated events for top players. This shift could lead to a reallocation of resources that might leave smaller tournaments like the Rocket Classic in jeopardy.
Rolapp’s initiative represents a major transformation for the Tour, which has maintained its current structure for nearly thirty years. While some players have praised the stability of the existing format, there are concerns that it lacks the cohesive narrative found in other professional sports. Supporters of the new plan argue it will enhance the financial viability of premier events, but skepticism remains about its impact on traditional local tournaments.
The Rocket Classic has become the first casualty in this evolving landscape, but it may not be the last as the PGA Tour navigates its future.
