Phillies Acquire Derek Hill from White Sox to Strengthen Outfield Amid Injury Concerns

Derek Hill is returning to Philadelphia, this time donning the Phillies' colors after a trade with the Chicago White Sox, the team confirmed on Thursday. The Phillies sent prospects Dylan Campbell and José Colmenares to the White Sox in exchange for Hill and an international bonus pool allocation valued at $250,000.

This deal is not a blockbuster, but it is significant for the Phillies, particularly in light of their current outfield challenges. Adolis García, who has played 63 games in right field this season, sustained a right shoulder injury during a recent game against the Toronto Blue Jays. While the results of his imaging tests are expected to be available on Friday, there is a possibility he may be placed on the injured list. Interestingly, the Phillies had shown interest in Hill prior to García's injury, according to reports from The Athletic.

This season, García has struggled offensively, posting a batting average of just .195 along with seven home runs and 21 RBIs, while also racking up 84 strikeouts—the second-highest on the team. The Phillies’ outfield as a whole has faced significant hitting challenges in 2026, with Brandon Marsh being the standout performer, boasting a .326 batting average, ranking fifth in the majors.

At 30 years old, Hill is anticipated to play both center and right field for the Phillies, especially against left-handed pitchers. He made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2020 and has had a varied career since then. This season, with the White Sox—who currently lead the AL Central—he has a batting line of .213/.284/.375, with four home runs and eight RBIs. Notably, he has performed better against lefties, hitting .245 with an OPS of .789, according to MLB.com.

“It really was a situation where we were in a little bit of a roster crunch,” said White Sox manager Will Venable regarding the trade, as reported by the Associated Press. “It speaks to D. Hill and his performance that there was significant interest in him.” With the designation of right-handed reliever Jackson Rutledge for assignment, a spot opened up for Hill on the roster, where he could join an outfield platoon that might include prospect Gabriel Rincones Jr. in the near future.
