Phillies Fans Celebrate Sanchez's Historic Scoreless Innings Streak
PHILADELPHIA – A remarkable moment unfolded at Citizens Bank Park on June 3, as 40,453 enthusiastic fans witnessed Cristopher Sánchez's impressive run of 50 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings come to an end. This streak, the longest ever by a left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball history, drew comparisons to legendary records set by Don Drysdale and Orel Hershiser.
Although Sánchez ultimately fell short of surpassing Hershiser's 59-inning mark, the crowd erupted in applause when the streak ended on a two-out single by San Diego's Jackson Merrill in the seventh inning. Ty France, who had doubled, crossed home plate, breaking Sánchez's remarkable shutout run. “A great ovation,” Sánchez reflected later, acknowledging the significance of the moment. “A big moment for me.” The support from the crowd was palpable as they stood and cheered, allowing Sánchez to soak in the recognition before he completed the inning.
The Phillies responded quickly, with solo home runs from J.T. Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber in the bottom of the seventh, leading to a 3-2 victory over the Padres. Sánchez had not allowed a run since April 30, showcasing his dominance throughout May and building a remarkable streak that will be remembered in baseball history.
Sánchez's achievement places him fifth on the all-time list for scoreless innings, following only the legendary pitchers Drysdale, Hershiser, Walter Johnson, and Jack Coombs. Interim manager Don Mattingly praised Sánchez's performance, noting, “Sanchy puts himself in the history books.” Teammates echoed this sentiment, with catcher Realmuto calling it “the most special moment I’ve been a part of with a starting pitcher.”
As Sánchez reflected on his accomplishment, he expressed disbelief at reaching such heights in his career, stating, “Something I never imagined in my life that I would do.” This historic night not only highlighted Sánchez's talent but also showcased the passionate support of Phillies fans, who cherish moments of greatness.
