Phillies Rally Late to Overcome Sasaki and Dodgers in Close Contest
In a thrilling matchup, the Philadelphia Phillies edged out the Los Angeles Dodgers with a late surge, clinching a 4-3 victory. Despite Roki Sasaki's impressive performance, which included striking out seven batters, the Dodgers fell short as the Phillies rallied in the eighth inning.
Sasaki, who had been gaining momentum on the mound, showcased his elite pitching skills by reaching triple-digit speeds, clocking a remarkable 100.1 mph fastball during his first at-bat against Kyle Schwarber. He maintained an average velocity of 98.5 mph throughout his 5 1/3 innings, a notable increase from his season average. However, his outing was marred by a home run from Alec Bohm in the second inning, which marked the only earned run he allowed.
After surrendering that early run, Sasaki regained his composure, retiring 13 consecutive batters until the sixth inning, when Schwarber and Trea Turner both managed singles. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts decided to pull Sasaki after 84 pitches, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd at Dodger Stadium as he exited.
Heading into the eighth inning with a 3-1 lead, the Dodgers turned to Tanner Scott to close out the frame. Unfortunately for Los Angeles, Scott gave up a two-run homer to Edmundo Sosa, which shifted the momentum in favor of the Phillies, who then took their first lead of the game. The Dodgers had previously scored their runs through an Alex Call single, a Santiago Espinal sacrifice fly, and an RBI single from Mookie Betts.
This defeat ended the Dodgers' six-game winning streak, bringing their record to 37-21. The series will conclude with ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto set to pitch for Los Angeles in the rubber match on Sunday.
