Pirates Rally from Behind to Edge Dodgers and End Losing Streak
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates staged a remarkable comeback on Wednesday night, overcoming a five-run deficit to secure a thrilling 9-8 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, thereby snapping a four-game losing streak at PNC Park. Tyler Callihan played a pivotal role, hitting two home runs, marking the first of his career.
In the fourth inning, the Dodgers (43-25) took an early lead when Max Muncy drove in Freddie Freeman with a two-out double. Muncy himself later scored on a single from Kyle Tucker, giving Los Angeles a 2-0 advantage. The Pirates (35-33) responded in the same inning as Callihan launched a stunning 424-foot home run off Shohei Ohtani, narrowing the gap to 2-1.
The Dodgers extended their lead to 6-1 in the sixth inning when Ryan Ward hit a grand slam, his first career home run. However, the Pirates began their comeback in the seventh, when Brandon Lowe's two-run double chased Ohtani from the game and set the stage for a big eighth inning.
In the eighth, Callihan struck again with a three-run homer, putting the Pirates ahead 9-6. Spencer Horwitz contributed with a two-run shot to cap off a five-run inning. The Dodgers made a late push in the ninth with a two-run homer from Ohtani, but the Pirates held on for the win.
Callihan finished the game with four RBIs and three runs. Meanwhile, Evan Sisk notched his first win of the season, and Gregory Soto secured his ninth save. This game was notable not only for the comeback but also for the Pirates extending their streak of games with at least one extra-base hit to 41, the longest in Major League Baseball.
Looking ahead, the Pirates will send RHP Mitch Keller (5-3, 4.81 ERA) to the mound for the series finale against LHP Justin Wrobleski (7-2, 2.62 ERA) of the Dodgers on Thursday night.
