Pirates Stage Dramatic Comeback to Overcome Dodgers
PITTSBURGH –– In a stunning turn of events, the Pittsburgh Pirates snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, toppling the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-8 on Wednesday night. The game shifted dramatically in the late innings, leaving the Dodgers reeling after holding a comfortable five-run lead at the start of the seventh inning.
Initially, everything seemed to be in favor of the Dodgers with Shohei Ohtani on the mound, who had performed admirably for six innings, allowing just one run. However, the tide began to turn when Ohtani issued a leadoff walk in the seventh and struggled to field a swinging bunt, quickly placing two runners on base without any outs.
Although Ohtani managed to strike out the next two batters, disaster struck when he faced Brandon Lowe. The two-way star threw a fastball on a 3-0 count that Lowe capitalized on, driving in two runs with a double down the line. This hit marked the end of Ohtani’s night, pushing his ERA above 1.00 for the first time this season, although he still holds a 1.06 mark, the best among pitchers with over 60 innings pitched.
As the Dodgers' bullpen faltered, Alex Vesia allowed Lowe to score, and Kyle Hurt struggled in the eighth, giving up a three-run homer to rookie Tyler Callihan, who had already notched a home run earlier in the game. The Pirates rallied for five runs in the inning, with Spencer Horwitz contributing to the onslaught with a two-run shot of his own.
Despite Ohtani's attempt to salvage the game with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth, it was not enough to prevent the Pirates from forcing a rubber match in the series, which will take place on Thursday. The Dodgers, while still boasting a solid record of 19-7 over their last 26 games, are facing increasing scrutiny due to recent bullpen struggles, raising concerns as they head into the final game of the series.
