Puyallup Tribe Celebrates Historic FIFA Recognition with Vibrant Festivities

The Puyallup Tribe of Indians, alongside the South Sound community, marked a monumental occasion as they welcomed the World Cup to Washington with an exuberant parade, party, and fireworks display on Friday evening. This event signifies FIFA’s groundbreaking acknowledgment of an indigenous nation as a host, a milestone that brings immense pride to tribal members.

“It’s a really good feeling just to be a part of this whole thing,” expressed Bill Sterud, the tribal chairman, in an interview with KIRO 7. The grand parade that wound through the streets of Tacoma kicked off a series of celebrations, coinciding with the World Cup activities taking place in Seattle. During this time, the tribe plans to hold watch parties, traditional games, Salish cultural events, and more.

Teddy W. Simchen from the Puyallup Tribal Veterans emphasized the significance of their involvement, stating, “This is the first time an indigenous tribe has been a sponsor in any kind of major sporting event such as this, especially to the scope of what we are doing.” As part of the parade, Simchen and fellow veterans proudly carried an eagle staff at the front, leading a procession that included hundreds of participants representing diverse global cultures.

“All these visitors from other parts of the country and other nations have never seen these kinds of events,” Simchen noted. “We are going to show what it’s like to be a coastal tribal member.” The celebrations will continue near the tribal headquarters on Monday, coinciding with the match between Egypt and Belgium in Seattle.
