Quarterfinals See Portland St. Patrick and Williamston Bow Out of State Baseball Tournament
In a disappointing turn for the Portland St. Patrick baseball team, their pursuit of a consecutive state title came to a halt in the Division 4 state quarterfinals against Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart. The game was marked by a pivotal three-run third inning from Sacred Heart, allowing them to secure a 4-2 victory over the top-ranked Shamrocks. Jerryd Scheurer contributed with a triple and a run scored, while teammates Charlie and Tyler Thelen each added an RBI. St. Patrick had previously advanced to the quarterfinals after a convincing 9-1 win against Maple City Glen Lake in the regional final.
Meanwhile, the Williamston Hornets faced a challenging matchup as they fell to Dearborn Divine Child with a score of 12-2 in the Division 2 quarterfinals held at Eastern Michigan University. Struggling to find their rhythm, the Hornets didn’t score until the seventh inning. Jack Hart was the standout player, driving in both runs for Williamston. Divine Child took an early lead, scoring four runs in the first four innings and then breaking the game open with a five-run fifth inning. Williamston had reached this stage following a 9-4 victory over Trenton.
The Division 1 regional final saw Mason's hopes dashed as they were shut out 8-0 by Detroit Catholic Central. The Bulldogs managed only four hits throughout the match, with the opposition scoring four runs in the initial inning. A stellar performance by pitcher Andrew Mahoney, who recorded 15 strikeouts over a complete game, helped secure the win for Catholic Central.
In Division 3, Pewamo-Westphalia's season ended with a 3-1 defeat to Schoolcraft. Will Huhn made a notable contribution with an RBI, while Logan Drysdale added a double and crossed home plate for the Pirates. Alex Drysdale provided the team with their other hit during the game.
Additionally, in another Division 4 regional final, the No. 5-ranked Pirates of Pewamo-Westphalia faced a tough match against No. 2-ranked Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart, resulting in a 12-0 loss. Parker Billings was the standout for Pewamo-Westphalia, reaching base twice with a hit and drawing a walk.
