Red Sox Acknowledge Upcoming Opt-Out for Veteran Pitcher Tommy Kahnle
The Boston Red Sox are closely monitoring the impending opt-out for veteran pitcher Tommy Kahnle, which is set for June 1. Currently performing with the Triple-A team, Kahnle holds the option to enter free agency unless he receives a promotion to the major league roster. His strong performance in the minors has put pressure on the Red Sox to make a timely decision.
Interim manager Chad Tracy confirmed the organization’s awareness of the situation, stating, “I know there are dates coming up. Our front office, they’re always aware of that. We’re well-aware of who he is, what he’s done and his performance down there.” Kahnle has been impressive in Triple-A, yielding only three runs over 19.1 innings and maintaining a streak of 14 consecutive scoreless innings.
If promoted, Kahnle would enhance the Red Sox's pitching depth, adding a seasoned arm to the bullpen. Tracy, who managed Kahnle earlier this season in Triple-A, expressed confidence in the right-hander's capabilities, noting, “Veteran player, been around a long time and has a ton of big league time. He’s got the changeup, he’s added a slider and throwing a little harder. You know he’s capable and he’s throwing the ball well down there.”
Throughout his MLB career, Kahnle has appeared in 456 games, posting an 11-19 record with a 3.61 ERA.
