Pressure Mounts on USC's Lincoln Riley Ahead of 2026 Season

The college football offseason has been marked by a flurry of activity, from ongoing lawsuits to heated discussions about playoff expansion and the future of college athletics. Amidst this backdrop, a significant conversation is emerging regarding which head coaches may find themselves under scrutiny as the 2026 season approaches, with USC's Lincoln Riley standing out as a prime candidate.

Riley has cultivated a remarkable coaching career, recognized for his exceptional recruiting skills and the ability to develop quarterbacks. He is credited with nurturing talents such as Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and Caleb Williams, all of whom have become high-profile picks in the NFL Draft. Additionally, his tenure at Oklahoma saw the team reach the College Football Playoff three times, showcasing his capacity for success.

However, Riley's time at USC has not met the lofty expectations set for him. The Trojans have failed to secure a playoff berth in each of his first four seasons, with their highest ranking being No. 12. Now, with quarterback Jayden Maiava returning for his senior year after a 9-3 season in 2025, fans and analysts are anticipating a breakthrough that could finally lead the team into the playoffs.

Bill Austin of The Film Guy Network recently placed Riley sixth on his list of coaches facing the most pressure entering the new season. “If he goes 8-4, [Lincoln Riley] is cooked,” Austin stated, highlighting the precarious nature of Riley’s position as the season looms.

USC lured Riley away from Oklahoma with a staggering $110 million contract, aiming to return the program to its former glory. Yet, four years in, the Trojans remain far from achieving that goal. While Riley continues to produce NFL-caliber talent—Maiava is projected as a Day 2 pick and wide receiver Makai Lemon was selected in the first round this year—the lack of playoff success is increasingly concerning.

As USC gears up for the 2026 season, the need for a significant turnaround is clear. Without a playoff appearance, Riley's future at the helm could be in jeopardy, raising the question: what will it take for him to secure his position beyond the upcoming season?
