Red Sox Open to Trading Veteran Catcher Amidst Struggles
The Boston Red Sox have entered the MLB season with a lackluster performance, currently holding the fourth-worst record in the American League, trailing eight games below .500 and out of playoff contention. With the trade deadline still nearly two months away, the team is reportedly exploring trade options.
According to Jen McCaffrey from The Athletic, the Red Sox have received interest in all three of their catchers—Connor Wong, Carlos Narvaez, and Mickey Gasper—from various teams. However, it appears that only Wong may be on the trading block. The 30-year-old has primarily served as the team’s third catcher this season.
Wong's performance statistics include a batting line of .264/.338/.375, with a .713 OPS and 10 RBIs across 82 plate appearances. While these figures may not position him as a front-line starter, he remains a viable option for teams in need of catching depth. Notably, Wong's wRC+ stands at 99, ranking him 175th among catchers with at least 80 plate appearances this season.
Defensively, Wong has some weaknesses, placing in the 40th percentile for Blocks Above Average and the 21st percentile for Pitch Framing, according to Baseball Savant. Nonetheless, he is an MLB-caliber catcher earning a modest $1.375 million this season, with club control extending through 2028. With the Red Sox looking to solidify Narvaez and Gasper as their primary catchers, a trade involving Wong could materialize in the near future.
