Red Sox Prepare to Shift Catching Duties Amid Struggles at the Plate

The Boston Red Sox appear poised to implement a notable change in their catching lineup. This season, Carlos Narváez has struggled offensively, posting a batting average of .210 with a .605 OPS, including two home runs and three runs batted in. Meanwhile, Connor Wong has demonstrated a slightly better performance, with a .668 OPS and a slash line of .241/.323/.345 across 22 games.

Despite these numbers, the team is increasingly impressed by Mickey Gasper's contributions. Interim manager Chad Tracy indicated on Saturday that Gasper is being considered for a more prominent role behind the plate. “At the moment, with right-handers, we’re looking to be aggressive to get Mickey in there,” Tracy remarked, as reported by Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. “That’s not an easy thing for a drastic shift and the other two guys want to be in there, but we have to capitalize on that.”

Tracy acknowledged the unpredictability of a baseball season, stating, “That doesn’t mean that as you move along, things can’t change. Injuries happen, or guys go in slumps.” Currently, however, the Red Sox find it difficult to overlook Gasper’s impressive performance.

Gasper has made quite an impression, boasting a .784 OPS with a .340 batting average in his 16 games, along with two RBIs, three doubles, and eight runs scored. It seems the Red Sox may be making a strategic decision by giving him more playing time behind the plate.
