Red Sox Send $55 Million Pitcher to Triple-A Before Yankees Showdown
The Boston Red Sox made a surprising roster decision right before their crucial series against the New York Yankees. As reported by WBZ's Dan Roche, the team has optioned right-handed pitcher Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester following a challenging performance against the Baltimore Orioles.
In a recent outing, Bello allowed eight earned runs over five innings, contributing to an 8-2 defeat for the Red Sox. This performance raised his season ERA to 6.34 after 61 innings pitched. The 27-year-old had entered the season with high hopes, having signed a six-year, $55 million extension in 2024, but has struggled to meet expectations on the mound.
In a corresponding move, the Red Sox are calling up left-handed reliever Joe La Sorsa, who is anticipated to join the roster in time for their first game at Yankee Stadium. Bello's difficulties have been evident, as his strikeout rate has dipped to a career-low of 15.6 percent, and he has been giving up 1.48 home runs for every nine innings pitched.
The right-hander has particularly struggled against left-handed hitters, who have posted a .323/.384/.554 batting average against him in 147 appearances prior to Wednesday's game. To help address this issue, the Red Sox have employed left-handed pitchers Jovani Morán and Tyler Samaniego to start games before Bello takes the mound. However, both relievers have allowed runs before Bello enters the game.
Despite being optioned, there remains a possibility for Bello's return to the major leagues if he can refine his mechanics and show improvement in his performance during minor league games.
