Red Sox Surge Late to Overwhelm Guardians, 9-1

CLEVELAND — The Boston Red Sox (24-33) transformed a nail-biting contest into a resounding victory over the Guardians, winning 9-1 on Saturday. Connor Wong shone with three RBIs, while Sonny Gray delivered a stellar pitching performance, leading the team to a dominant finish.

The Red Sox’s offensive resurgence in the latter half of the game was fueled by contributions from the lower part of their lineup. Wong, batting eighth, and Caleb Durbin, in the ninth spot, both delivered crucial RBI doubles that shifted the momentum from a 1-1 deadlock to a commanding lead. In the ninth inning, Boston added six additional runs, highlighted by Wong’s two-run single and a three-run homer from Jarren Duran, sealing the win.

Wong's strong performance included a go-ahead double in the sixth inning, which was initially ruled a home run but was later changed to a double after a review. This was Wong’s third game with three RBIs in the past two years, underscoring his growing impact on the team's offense.

Meanwhile, Gray was exceptional on the mound, allowing only one run over six innings while striking out seven batters. After conceding two early doubles that put Cleveland on the board, Gray settled into a rhythm, striking out three consecutive batters to maintain Boston's slim lead.

In addition to Wong's efforts, Durbin continued to excel at the plate, contributing another RBI with a double in the eighth inning, marking his third double in as many games. The Red Sox were also able to navigate through the Guardians’ bullpen effectively, with Cleveland's pitching faltering and defense struggling, resulting in four errors during the game.

Boston's next game will see them face the Guardians again, with lefty Ranger Suarez (2-3, 3.02 ERA) taking the mound against righty Tanner Bibee (0-7, 4.57 ERA). The matchup is set for 1:40 p.m. ET, after which the Red Sox will enjoy a day off before beginning a brief homestand against the Orioles.
