Reflecting on a Remarkable Class of 2026 as Their High School Journey Concludes

As the high school sports season wraps up, it’s hard not to feel nostalgic about the incredible journey of the Class of 2026. This cohort has made a lasting impact on Indiana athletics, marked by unforgettable achievements that will be remembered for years to come. Their stories resonate not just within their schools but throughout the entire state.

Leading the charge are standout athletes like Naima Ghaffar and Noah Bontrager. Ghaffar, a Grand Valley State recruit, clinched her second state title this winter in girls wrestling, finishing with an impressive 86-2 record over her last two seasons. Meanwhile, Bontrager, a powerhouse in distance running, added two track titles to his collection, solidifying his legacy as a four-time state champion and the only Indiana high school athlete to run a sub-4-minute mile.

Other remarkable talents also shone brightly this season. Brady Scholl made history for Northridge High School by leading the boys basketball team to its first-ever regional title, finishing the year with a stellar 26-2 record. His impressive career total of over 1,500 points places him third on the all-time scoring list for his school, ensuring his place in Elkhart County sports history.

In football, Reese Breveard was a standout for the Concord Minutemen, whose all-road schedule culminated in a semistate appearance. With a spectacular game-winning touchdown and a crucial onside kick recovery, he showcased his extraordinary talent. Coach Craig Koehler praised his skills, declaring him "the best player in northern Indiana and it’s not even close."

The Class of 2026 also saw strong performances in girls sports, with Eva Herbert reaching the 1,000-point milestone in basketball, and the Northridge girls team making a deep playoff run. The season concluded with heart-wrenching moments, especially for Westview’s boys basketball team, which fell just short in the Class 2A state title game, underscoring the competitive spirit of these young athletes.

As this incredible class steps into their next chapters, their contributions to high school sports will not be forgotten. They have set a high standard for future generations and have left an indelible mark on the landscape of Indiana athletics.
