Riverheads Advances to State Semifinals with Victory Over Lancaster

GREENVILLE — Riverheads remains on track for another state baseball championship after a solid performance in the state quarterfinals held on June 9. The team secured a 2-0 victory against Lancaster, propelling them into the Virginia High School League Class 1 state semifinals. They are set to face Patrick Henry (Glade Spring) at 11:30 a.m. on June 12 at Kiwanis Field in Salem. Patrick Henry made headlines by defeating the reigning state champions, Auburn, 6-5 in an intense extra-inning match.

This game marked a poignant moment for four Riverheads seniors, including Brody Phillips, who expressed the significance of winning their last home game. "It meant that we have two more games after this to win," Phillips stated after contributing a hit and scoring a run in the match. "We've just got to keep playing hard. Even though it was the last time here we've still got two more chances to do something special."

Riverheads is aiming for its third state championship, having last claimed the title in 2018. Phillips got the scoring started in the third inning with a one-out single, advancing home on a double from Ethan Mulcahy. Chase Donathan added another run shortly thereafter with a single, providing all the offense needed for the victory.

Freshman Jackson Berkstresser delivered a stellar pitching performance, completing the game with no runs allowed and only four hits. He struck out eight batters while not issuing any walks. Coach Rodney Painter praised Berkstresser's resilience throughout the season, noting his recent recovery from injuries. "He pitched a gem," Painter remarked. Mulcahy was the standout hitter for Riverheads, finishing the game with two hits.

Coach Painter emphasized the team's strong performance, stating, "The team played great today. Our pitching and defense has been strong all year and they showed up again today." The upcoming semifinal game will be a crucial step for Riverheads as they pursue their championship aspirations.
