Riverview and Mercyhurst Prep Set for PIAA Baseball Rematch on June 1

Baseball enthusiasts are gearing up for an exciting first-round playoff matchup as Riverview (15-7) faces off against Mercyhurst Prep (20-2) at 11 a.m. on Monday at Mercyhurst University in Erie. This clash marks a significant moment in the Class 2A tournament, with Riverview entering as the seventh seed and Mercyhurst Prep as the top seed in their district.

The winner of this game will advance to the quarterfinals, where they will take on the victor of the matchup between Everett (18-6) and Fort Cherry (18-2) on Thursday, with the site and time yet to be determined. Key players to watch include Riverview's Owen Orbich and Mercyhurst Prep's Zack Kruszewski, both of whom have been instrumental in their teams' successes this season.

This year, the Raiders have demonstrated strong performance, recently securing a third-place consolation victory at Washington & Jefferson's Ross Memorial Park. Their journey to the PIAA tournament marks the third time in six seasons for Riverview, who had an impressive outing against South Side, racking up 13 hits and six walks. Junior Miles Duncan contributed with a home run, while freshman Jake Sprajcar and junior Ian Stempfer each brought in two runs. Lukas Duncan, the starting pitcher who excelled last year, is anticipated to lead the team on the mound again.

In last year’s first-round playoff, Riverview faced a challenging defeat against Mercyhurst Prep, losing 5-3 after a late-game rally fell short. Notably, the Raiders are the last remaining Alle-Kiski Valley baseball or softball team in the postseason and are making their playoff run with a roster devoid of seniors, reminiscent of their 1983 team that reached the Class AA state title.

On the other side, Mercyhurst Prep is riding high after clinching their ninth District 10 championship with a decisive win over Saegertown. The Lakers are currently on an impressive 18-game winning streak and boast a formidable .405 team batting average. Senior pitcher Hunter Krahe, committed to Charleston Southern, is expected to take the mound against Riverview, having previously faced them last year. The Lakers seek their first PIAA title during their 13th trip to the state playoffs, backed by a strong lineup that includes six players hitting .400 or better.

As the teams prepare for this crucial contest, fans can anticipate a thrilling matchup that promises to showcase the best of high school baseball.
