Robert Horry Emphasizes Austin Reaves' Need to Prioritize His Future
Austin Reaves, a standout guard for the Los Angeles Lakers, is poised to opt out of his current contract and enter the free-agent market this summer. While there is a divide among fans—some advocating for a sign-and-trade to enhance the team's roster balance, others wishing for him to secure a new deal with the Lakers—Reaves’ future remains uncertain.
The Lakers are expected to have significant salary cap flexibility, but they also face the challenge of potentially re-signing key players, including LeBron James. Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Nets have been identified as a possible suitor, with reports suggesting that Reaves could attract offers as high as $40 million annually from rival teams.
Former NBA champion Robert Horry, who won three titles with the Lakers, weighed in on Reaves' situation during a segment on ESPN L.A. Horry emphasized that the young guard must focus on what is best for himself and his career. "I think with Reaves, he has to do what is best for him," Horry stated. "Sometimes fans forget that. We want him to stay, but at the end of the day, his life. He has to do what is best for him."
Horry humorously pointed out the financial implications: "Let’s say some team is going to offer you $180 million, and the Lakers are going to offer you $120 million. That is $40 million. He got to make up that $40 million," he added. With substantial offers likely on the table, Reaves is set to secure a lucrative contract this summer.
However, the question remains whether Reaves would choose a larger deal with a struggling team like the Nets, who finished the season with a record of 20-62, over the opportunity to remain with the Lakers. While staying in Los Angeles would ensure financial stability for his family, the allure of an NBA championship, which money alone cannot buy, might also weigh heavily on his decision.
