Rutgers Coach Greg Schiano Discusses Team Dynamics and New Rules at Charity Golf Event
PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY - During the 20th annual Charity Golf Classic, Rutgers head football coach Greg Schiano engaged with reporters, addressing various topics surrounding the Scarlet Knights and their offseason. The event successfully raised $200,000 for organizations such as Chop for Change, One Veteran at a Time, and the Bob Mulcahy Scholarship fund.
When asked about the new coaching staff's performance in recruiting, Schiano acknowledged the challenges that come with staff changes, noting the loss of connections from previous coaches. He emphasized that when two schools present comparable offers to a recruit, the decision often hinges on the relationships and trust built between the player and the coaching staff. Schiano praised tight ends coach Scott Vallone for his energetic recruiting style and highlighted offensive line coach Jim Turner’s charisma, stating, “He’s a great football coach with a big personality. He’s funny, he’s talented, he can sing, he can do everything.” Turner has already secured commitments from six offensive linemen.
On the quarterback competition, Schiano mentioned that while no starting quarterback has been determined yet, both candidates have shown promising abilities. He noted, “There are times we’re watching, and one is edging ahead, and then the other comes up.” He expressed enthusiasm for Sean Ashenfelder’s development and praised the collaborative spirit of the quarterback room, describing it as a family environment fostered by Coach Ciarrocca.
Schiano also shared his thoughts on the newly implemented punt formation rule, expressing concern that it was passed without adequate attention from coaches. “In our league, it was unanimous, nobody wanted it,” he said. Despite this, he acknowledged the need for adaptation to the rule changes.
Finally, Schiano reflected on Spencer Brown’s performance as the strength and conditioning coach, stating that while it was a challenge to integrate him just before summer camp last season, Brown has adjusted well, contributing to a successful spring camp free of major injuries. Schiano is optimistic about the team’s prospects moving forward.
