Saint Leo Softball Team Claims Historic NCAA Division II Championship

The Saint Leo University softball team made history on Wednesday by securing its inaugural national championship, triumphing over sixth-seeded McKendree University with a final score of 5-2 in the NCAA Division II title match held in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In a thrilling contest, Izzy LaRoche delivered a pivotal two-run triple to left-centerfield in the seventh inning, providing crucial insurance runs that helped the Lions clinch the championship with an impressive overall record of 54 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. "They are one heck of a group," expressed head coach Erin Kinberger. "They are built for this. Thank you for letting me be tough on you, and being gritty, and believing in each other and yourselves."

Pitcher Alex Wright stepped in for starter Tierney Hocquard in the fifth inning and expertly navigated the final three frames to secure the win. The Lions showcased exceptional defensive skills throughout the game, highlighted by centerfielder Sydney Cline's remarkable diving catch that preserved a 1-1 tie after four innings.

Second baseman Briana Neal also played a crucial role, making several standout defensive plays, including a diving stop for a putout in the bottom of the seventh, following a double from McKendree to start the inning. Earlier in the series, top-seeded Saint Leo had decisively defeated McKendree 15-4 in the first game of the best-of-three final.
