Scituate Boys Lacrosse Claims Division IV Title in Unbeaten Season
PROVIDENCE — The Scituate High School boys lacrosse team celebrated a flawless season after decisively defeating Rogers High School 15-4 to secure the Division IV championship. Last year, the Spartans experienced heartbreak in the finals against Rogers, having entered that game with an undefeated record. This season, with many of the same players returning, their focus was clear: to claim the championship title. “This was great, especially compared to last year when we lost in the state final,” said senior captain Caden Gurjian. “To come back out here and finish the job, it feels great.”
Determined to rectify last year's disappointment, the Spartans aimed to erase the only defeat from their recent seasons. Gurjian, alongside fellow senior captains Brady Scanlon and Grant Bailey, each contributed three goals to the victory. Despite their commanding lead of 8-1 at halftime, the team maintained a disciplined mindset, continuously reminding themselves to treat the game as if the score were tied. “We always like to say ‘What’s the score?’ and then we chant 0-0,” Gurjian explained. “We just keep fighting, keep our heads down, and play hard.”
Coach Pete Kelleher reinforced this approach, emphasizing the importance of focusing on their performance rather than the score. “Every timeout, every quarter, every half we ask what’s the score, and the team answers 0-0,” he stated. Kelleher is optimistic about the future, noting the excitement among the seniors to mentor the underclassmen as they continue to build a strong lacrosse community. “They’re all a bunch of brothers; it’s a fun community to be a part of,” he added.
The Scituate team, which has a long history of playing together, has achieved remarkable success, winning 31 out of 32 games over the past two years. Kelleher is proud of the program’s growth, which now boasts a roster of 40 players, a significant increase from just 14 four years ago. “For the first time in the 21 years of this program, we had a JV team… and we were able to put goals up, and we unloaded the bench almost every single game,” he remarked.
On the other side, Rogers faced a difficult setback. The Vikings fell behind early, conceding three goals within the first few minutes. Rocky Ramsey managed to score for Rogers, but by then they were trailing significantly. This season, Scituate triumphed in all three matches against Rogers, reversing last year's championship upset. The Spartans have truly established their dominance in Division IV lacrosse.
