Scottie Scheffler is tied for the lead at the PGA Championship after shooting a round of three-under par 67 on day one.

Scheffler was in ominous form on Thursday at Aronimink, and he had his ball under total control.

The 29-year-old world number one reigned supreme at Quail Hollow last year as he ran away with the Wanamaker trophy.

Now Scottie Scheffler is looking to defend the PGA Championship this week at Aronimink.

Scheffler was given a friendly group at the PGA Championship, after being paired with Matt Fitzpatrick and Justin Rose.

And aside from the two bogeys he made on the fourth and 14th holes, he never really looked like he was in any kind of trouble.

Scheffler spoke to the media after shooting a superb opening round 67 at Aronimink on Thursday afternoon.

The world number one responded when asked to give his verdict on how he played.

Yeah, definitely the best start I’ve gotten off to this year, maybe besides American Express maybe, he said.

Yeah, I felt like, especially going into the weekend when you look at like the Masters and Hilton Head and Cadillac, finishing second was probably not all that bad from where I was starting the weekend.

Yeah, definitely nice to get off to a better start this week.

It’s always important to get the ball on the fairway. I think around this golf course there’s a lot of run-ups on the greens, and they put the pins on some of the high points. So your scores are definitely going to be lower if you hit the ball on the fairway, but it’s still really, really difficult to make birdies.

You hit some really nice iron shots in there to 10, 15 feet, and you’ve got putts with a ton of break on them. This golf course, especially on the greens, is quite challenging.

Scheffler was then asked how he feels about holding the lead at the PGA Championship after day one for the first time in his career.

Yeah, I think the emphasis would be share of the lead. I think there’s like six or seven guys up there. I mean, it’s a really tight leaderboard. At this moment, it’s anybody’s tournament.

Like you said, it’s nice to get off to a good start. Get some rest tonight and wake up and do more of the same tomorrow.

Scottie Scheffler’s stats from day one at the PGA Championship

Scheffler drove the ball sensationally well on Thursday at Aronimink, and he was ranked 18th in strokes gained off the tee.

All of his numbers were pretty solid.

He ranked 59th in strokes gained approach and 35th in strokes gained tee-to-green.

However, his putter was the club that stood out.

Scottie Scheffler was ranked 6th in strokes gained putting on day one at the PGA Championship.

Overall, Scheffler was ranked tied 1st in strokes gained total, having gained 5.261 strokes on the field on Thursday.
