Sean Payton Secures New Five-Year Deal, Plans to Coach as Long as He Enjoys It
In a recent development, Sean Payton has signed a fresh five-year contract with the Denver Broncos, just three years after his previous deal was inked. During a Thursday press conference, Payton shared his thoughts on the future of his coaching career when asked how long he intends to remain in the role.
With a chuckle, Payton responded, "Well, five years." He emphasized the importance of his collaborative relationship with General Manager George Paton, stating, "We enjoy coming to work together and going through this together." He reflected on past discussions, recalling a moment when he was asked about his coaching longevity, saying, “Shoot. Plenty of time. Eight years, nine years. Whatever.” However, he also acknowledged that the reality of game day can shift one’s perspective, noting, “Well right now it feels like one year.”
Payton, who is currently 62 years old, has been coaching in the NFL since 2006. He remains focused on the present, expressing that he hasn’t contemplated retirement yet. “I think I have a lot of juice left and enjoy what we’re doing,” he said, adding that he would reevaluate when the enjoyment fades.
As he continues his tenure, Payton also has the opportunity to become the first coach to secure a Super Bowl victory with two different franchises. Other coaches in the league with similar aspirations include Mike McCarthy of the Pittsburgh Steelers and John Harbaugh of the New York Giants.
