Shohei Ohtani Overcomes Blister Issues to Shine Against Pirates
Los Angeles Dodgers' standout player Shohei Ohtani continues to impress, even as he grapples with a recurring blister on his finger. During his outing on Wednesday, he managed to limit the Pittsburgh Pirates to just three runs over seven innings despite struggling with his command throughout the game.
Ohtani's control was notably off, with only 44% of his pitches finding the strike zone. Nonetheless, he successfully restricted hard contact, yielding just two significant hits, one of which resulted in a solid home run. Following the fourth inning, Ohtani's earned run average (ERA) rose to 0.83, but he still maintains a remarkable season ERA of 1.06.
The two-way star demonstrated impressive velocity, averaging an increase of 0.8 MPH on his fastball compared to his season norm. He struck out three batters with this pitch, although he only achieved four swings-and-misses out of 43 fastballs thrown. His sweeper proved effective as well, generating an additional six whiffs, while he also mixed in a curveball during his performance.
Despite Ohtani's prowess, he encountered challenges with his pitch selection, enticing hitters to chase outside the strike zone only 22% of the time. Additionally, he fell behind in counts, achieving a first-pitch strike on just 34% of batters faced. To enhance his effectiveness moving forward, incorporating a more varied mix of pitches, such as curveballs and splitters, could yield better results.
With one out remaining in the seventh, Ohtani surrendered a double down the foul line, leading to his final line of three runs allowed in 6.2 innings. While he earned the victory and remains a contender in the Cy Young race, the need for improved command and strategy is clear as he aims to deepen his outings and minimize runs in future starts.
