Sikma Discusses Evolution of Basketball Style and Strategy

Jack Sikma reflects on the significant transformations in basketball since his playing days, emphasizing a shift towards a more skill-based game. In a recent discussion, he highlighted two key changes that have influenced the sport's evolution.

According to Sikma, the modification of hand-checking regulations was pivotal. "Attacks off the dribble started to be more effective when they changed the hand-checking rules," he explained, attributing this change to the influence of Michael Jordan. The adjustments were aimed at creating more space on the court for offensive players.

He also noted the impact of Shaquille O’Neal’s entry into the league, which altered post play dynamics. "And then the post play changed when Shaq got in the league and they changed how you could guard the post," Sikma said. New rules allowed for one hand on the back and the other elbow bent, complicating scoring opportunities in the post area.

These shifts, according to Sikma, underscored the need for better court spacing, particularly benefiting teams with big players who possess shooting skills. The evolution of the game continues to reflect these strategic adjustments.
