Southern Miss Baseball Coach Reflects on Season's End Following Virginia Loss
As Southern Miss baseball fans began to exit the stadium, the atmosphere grew somber after Virginia's Kyle Johnson hit a two-run homer, propelling the Cavaliers to a 15-11 lead in the 10th inning. The Golden Eagles, who had previously demonstrated resilience by tying the game in the eighth, faced a daunting task as they entered their final at-bat. However, hopes dwindled as Southern Miss was retired in order, ultimately concluding their season with the defeat.
The Golden Eagles, seeded ninth nationally, finished their season with a record of 44-17 after being eliminated by the second-seeded Virginia team, which now stands at 37-22. Reflecting on the game, Southern Miss head coach Christian Ostrander expressed his feelings of near-miss opportunities, stating, "We were close. Would you love to go back and take a few pitches differently or get a few swings here and there? Of course. But you can't today, you gotta go with what you got."
This season, while ending in disappointment, continued a trend for the Golden Eagles, who have now achieved 40 or more wins for the last decade but have only advanced beyond the regional stage twice during that time. Ostrander acknowledged the fans' eagerness for success, noting, "They're yearning to win that regional, win that super (regional). We are too." He encouraged supporters to continue their belief in the program as they look to improve for the next year.
The game itself was a back-and-forth affair, marked by five lead changes within the first five innings. Southern Miss initially led 6-4 before Virginia surged ahead with five runs in the fourth inning. Coach Ostrander opted to keep starting pitcher Grayden Harris on the mound during a challenging moment, a decision that ultimately backfired when Virginia capitalized with a bases-clearing triple, shifting the momentum decisively.
The loss also marked the end of the collegiate journeys for eight senior players, including Matthew Russo, who expressed gratitude for his time with the team, saying, "It's been a blessing to put on whatever jersey we're wearing that day and go out there. I'm glad I cherished it all."
