Sparks End Losing Streak with Strong Win Against Fire
LOS ANGELES -- The LA Sparks experienced a much-needed triumph, halting their three-game losing streak. With a balanced mix of offensive and defensive strategies, the Sparks (5-6) delivered a solid performance at home, overpowering the Portland Fire (6-7) with an 89-72 victory. The team surged ahead in the second half, restricting the Fire to just 29 points and forcing 14 turnovers after halftime.
Sparks coach Lynne Roberts commented on the halftime adjustments, saying, "It wasn't anything crazy at halftime. I think you get a better feel of what the game plan was and we just locked in." The team's defensive efforts were particularly impressive, allowing only 12 points in the third quarter and limiting the Fire's offensive rebounds to just three in the second half. Nneka Ogwumike and Dearica Hamby were standout performers, contributing 17 and 12 rebounds, respectively, with Ogwumike making a significant impact on both ends of the court.
Ogwumike expressed the team's motivation in the fourth quarter, noting, "We were playing for each other. Offense is offense but defense is really where it's at." This defensive focus was crucial, especially as the Sparks aimed to improve their home game record, which now stands at 3-5. "Winning at home is imperative," Ogwumike stated, emphasizing the importance of securing victories in front of their fans.
Defensively, the Sparks showcased their potential, holding the Fire to a shooting percentage of just .361. Coach Roberts acknowledged the need for consistency, stating, "The basketball gods will make you pay if you don't do things right." He stressed the importance of maintaining focus throughout the entire game to continue building on this progress.
In the matchup, Hamby led the Sparks with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Ogwumike added 20 points and an impressive 17 boards. Kelsey Plum made her mark in the second half, scoring 13 of her 16 points. For the Fire, Megan Gustafson led with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Emily Engstler and Carla Leite each added 10 points. The Sparks will now hit the road, starting with a game against the Seattle Storm, where they hope to carry their momentum forward.
