Spurs Consider Kristaps Porzingis as Potential Backup Center
The San Antonio Spurs are exploring options to strengthen their roster, particularly in the center position, as they prepare for the upcoming season. With star player Victor Wembanyama needing rest during games, the team faced challenges in the recent NBA Finals against the New York Knicks, highlighting the need for a dependable backup. Luke Kornet, while a crowd favorite known for his energy, lacks the necessary skills to effectively fill in for Wembanyama. Other options like Kelly Olynyk and Bismack Biyombo are not consistent contributors, making it crucial for the Spurs to secure a reliable center this offseason.
In a recent analysis, CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn suggested that Kristaps Porzingis, a veteran center from the Golden State Warriors, could be an ideal target for San Antonio. “Here's the luxury option I'm more excited about: Kristaps Porzingis,” Quinn noted, indicating that despite the Warriors' advantage with Bird Rights, Porzingis might be available if they choose to allocate funds elsewhere.
Quinn emphasized that San Antonio could effectively manage Porzingis' playing time, allowing him to avoid back-to-back games and optimizing his minutes alongside Kornet as a backup. He mentioned, “In higher-leverage games... he could both clean up the Wembanyama bench minutes and potentially play some stretches alongside him.”
While Porzingis may not currently match Wembanyama's talent level, he is still considered a skilled player with a strong track record. The 30-year-old, known for his exceptional height, has proven to be a formidable pick-and-pop player and a skilled shot blocker, averaging 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game during his time with Golden State after being traded from the Atlanta Hawks.
However, Porzingis' recent history of injuries raises concerns, and with the Warriors reportedly looking to re-sign him, the prospect of the Spurs acquiring the Latvian center may be uncertain. As the offseason unfolds, San Antonio is poised to make strategic moves to enhance their lineup.
