Sri Lanka Secures 41-Run Victory Over West Indies in First ODI
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — In an impressive display, Sri Lanka triumphed over the West Indies by 41 runs in the opening one-day international on Wednesday. Pathum Nissanka led the way with a well-crafted 79, while captain Kusal Mendis contributed a brisk 72, setting a solid foundation for the team's total.
The pair's partnership was pivotal, as they added 136 runs for the second wicket, helping Sri Lanka to a total of 303-7 after being invited to bat first. Charith Asalanka and Janith Liyanage further bolstered the innings with scores of 45 and an unbeaten 44, respectively.
On the West Indies side, captain Shai Hope fought valiantly, scoring 56 runs from 66 balls, and opener Justin Greaves chipped in with 45 off 38. However, the host nation fell short, all out for 262 in the final over. Despite partnerships of 50 for the first wicket and 52 for the third, the West Indies struggled to maintain momentum as wickets tumbled, increasing the required run rate.
Roston Chase appeared to offer some hope with his 33 runs, but his dismissal by Dushmantha Chameera, who took 4 wickets for 67 runs, marked a significant turning point. The West Indies had opted to bowl first after winning the toss, but their early breakthrough came with Kamindu Mendis falling for just 12 in the seventh over.
After an unexpected delay due to a floodlight failure late in the game, the West Indies faced an insurmountable challenge, needing 43 runs from just eight balls with one wicket remaining. The second match in the three-match series is set to take place in Kingston on Saturday, with the final game scheduled for next Monday at Sabina Park.
