St. Xavier Lacrosse Edges Past Upper Arlington to Secure Championship Spot

The highly anticipated clash between St. Xavier and Upper Arlington in the OHSAA Division I boys lacrosse state semifinals on June 3 at Mason lived up to the hype. Both teams had enjoyed undefeated seasons against in-state rivals, but one team had to face defeat. St. Xavier established a commanding 5-0 lead early on, yet Upper Arlington rallied impressively to tie the game in the final quarter. Ultimately, it was the defending champions, St. Xavier, who emerged victorious with an 8-7 win, earning their place in the championship match.

The key to St. Xavier's success lay in their robust defense, which effectively neutralized Upper Arlington's powerful offense, packed with future NCAA Division I talent. Despite the Golden Bears dominating possession for most of the game, the Bombers' defense thwarted numerous attempts, showcasing their resilience. "That was probably the best defense I've seen inside any lacrosse game," remarked St. Xavier head coach Nate Sprong. "They have a bunch of Division I guys that are dangerous, and we did a really good job shutting them down."

St. Xavier’s sophomore goalie, Sam Carpenter, acknowledged the teamwork that contributed to their defensive success. "Without them, I would've been left out to dry," Carpenter said. "They played their hearts out and did the best they possibly could have." With the win, the Bombers will aim to defend their title against Cleveland St. Ignatius on Saturday, June 6.

Upper Arlington's loss came during an emotionally charged week for the team, following the passing of legendary coach Ted Wolford, who led the Golden Bears to 16 state championships during his 24 years in charge. Current head coach Kyle Olson expressed the profound impact Wolford had on the program and the community, stating, "He meant so much to everyone in this program." Despite the grief, the Golden Bears displayed remarkable determination, staging a strong comeback after falling behind early.

With standout performances from All-American Luke Backes, who scored twice in the first half, Upper Arlington managed to close the gap and even the score at 6-6 in the closing minutes. However, St. Xavier remained composed, responding with two quick goals from Ethan Cole and DJ Frazier to regain the lead. Although Backes netted a final goal to narrow the deficit, the Bombers held on for the win.

Upper Arlington's season concludes with an impressive 18-4 record, with Coach Olson praising his senior players for their significant contributions to the program. Meanwhile, St. Xavier is focused on their upcoming championship match, with Carpenter emphasizing a team-first mentality. "At the end of the day, I want my team to be as happy as possible. With how much they've tried and put their hearts into this, I want them to win."
