Sumner Secures Runner-Up Spot in 4A Soccer Championship After Loss to Eastmont, 3-1
In a tightly contested match at Sparks Stadium on Saturday night, Sumner's high school boys soccer team battled valiantly but ultimately fell to Eastmont (Wenatchee) in the WIAA Class 4A state championship, with a final score of 3-1. The first half saw both teams entering the break scoreless, showcasing strong defensive efforts from Sumner.
However, Eastmont's offensive prowess soon took center stage. Aaron Leon, who had previously scored three goals in the semifinals against Lincoln of Seattle, continued to dominate the field, netting a hat trick during the championship match. Leon found the back of the net three times in the second half, with goals coming in the 47th, 61st, and 88th minutes, sealing his team's victory.
Sumner managed to score a consolation goal late in the match, with Aiden Vannoy finding the net in the 88th minute. Despite the loss, Sumner's performance marked the highest finish in the program's history, as they secured second place. The eighth-seeded Spartans made an impressive run through the bracket, defeating ninth-seeded Lewis and Clark 4-1 in the opening round, overcoming top-seeded Stadium 3-1 in the quarterfinals, and winning a tense penalty shootout against Newport in the semifinals.
This season has been one for the books for Sumner High School athletics. Just hours after the soccer team's championship match, the baseball team clinched the 4A state title by defeating Gonzaga Prep 7-0. Additionally, the football team secured its second consecutive 4A state championship last fall, while the girls basketball team made a strong showing in the 4A state championship game, finishing as runners-up to Davis.
