Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Discusses Baker Mayfield's Contract Future

As the NFL gears up for training camps, the pace of contract negotiations is expected to accelerate, particularly for notable players like Baker Mayfield of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After rejuvenating his career in Tampa Bay, Mayfield has brought top-tier quarterback performance to the team, all while playing under a favorable contract. However, as his current deal approaches its conclusion in 2026, Mayfield is seeking a new agreement that would secure his future with the franchise.

General manager Jason Licht has expressed the Buccaneers' commitment to retaining Mayfield, stating, "We’ve had some discussions and we’ll continue to have some internal discussions and see, and try to bring this to closure one way or another." He emphasized that the organization has no desire to see Mayfield leave, noting that the quarterback is focused on winning and remains in a positive mindset despite the ongoing negotiations.

While Mayfield has voiced some dissatisfaction with the pace of contract talks, Licht remains optimistic that it won’t hinder discussions. "I respect Baker," he said, adding, “He’s free to say whatever he wants to say. And that’s the way he’s wired and I have nothing but love for Baker.” Mayfield, who joined the Buccaneers in 2023, led the team to the playoffs and has proven his worth under a three-year, $100 million contract.

The pressing question now is the type of deal Mayfield will pursue, especially as top quarterbacks in the league command over $60 million annually. Given that Mayfield’s current salary is significantly lower, his next contract is set to be a focal point as the Buccaneers aim to solidify their future with him at the helm once again.
