Teagan Kavan Leads Texas to Consecutive Titles with Historic Performance
In a remarkable display of talent, junior right-handed pitcher Teagan Kavan made history by becoming the first athlete to achieve back-to-back Most Outstanding Player honors at the Women’s College World Series. Her stellar performance helped the Texas Longhorns clinch their second consecutive national title with a 4-1 victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Wednesday in Oklahoma City.
Kavan, who previously pitched a complete game on Tuesday, striking out six while allowing three runs on three hits, continued to showcase her skills in relief during the final game. Over two flawless innings, she struck out five batters, solidifying her reputation as one of the most reliable pitchers in college softball. In the previous year, she also led the Longhorns to their inaugural championship against Texas Tech and ace pitcher NiJaree Canady.
While Canady's career closes as one of college softball's finest, Kavan’s achievements mark her as a true Longhorn icon with an additional year of eligibility ahead. "I'm so proud to be a Longhorn," she expressed after the championship.
In addition to Kavan, junior slugger Katie Stewart played a pivotal role in Texas's success, helping the team escape the elimination bracket with four consecutive wins. Stewart demonstrated her offensive prowess by hitting home runs in four straight games, contributing a total of seven RBIs. Her presence was felt in the decisive fifth inning, where an intentional walk loaded the bases, leading to a critical error by the Texas Tech defense that allowed two runs to cross the plate.
The Longhorns secured their victory with a seventh-inning leadoff homer from junior center fielder Kayden Henry and an RBI single from senior second baseman Leighann Goode. With Texas now established as a national powerhouse, head coach Mike White will return a strong core of players, including Kavan and Stewart, poised to contend for another championship in 2027.
