Texas Tech Softball Strengthens Roster with Transfer of Pitcher Jayden Heavener from LSU
Texas Tech softball is gearing up for another competitive season following its consecutive runner-up finishes at the Women's College World Series, where they fell to Texas. The team has bolstered its lineup by acquiring former LSU pitcher Jayden Heavener through the transfer portal, a move she shared on her social media on June 13. Heavener is recognized as the top-ranked pitcher and seventh overall player in the transfer portal, according to On3's evaluations.
The 5-foot-6 sophomore had an impressive 2026 season, recording a 2.81 earned run average (ERA) and racking up 128 strikeouts over 139.1 innings pitched. In her 22 starts, she completed 16 games, including a standout performance against Oklahoma where she allowed just two hits and no earned runs, while striking out four batters.
Heavener's arrival comes as Texas Tech looks to fill the void left by NiJaree Canady, a two-time national player of the year and the second overall pick in the 2026 AUSL Draft. She will join forces in the circle with returning All-American Kaitlyn Terry, who still has a year of eligibility to contribute to the team.
Heavener is among several LSU players who have entered the transfer portal this offseason, including 2025 All-American Tori Edwards, who posted a .284 batting average with 12 home runs and 45 RBIs in the 2026 season. Other LSU players like Jada Phillips, Destiny Harris, and Maddox McKee have also opted to transfer.
In the past two years under coach Gerry Glasco, Texas Tech has made significant strides, achieving its first super regional appearances in program history in both 2025 and 2026, culminating in back-to-back national championship runs. The addition of Heavener is seen as a critical step in maintaining the team's status as a championship contender.
