Jürgen Klopp found himself in a bit of a stir over the weekend when he and Thomas Müller released their proposed starting lineup for Germany's match against Curaçao, notably excluding Jamal Musiala. After some backlash, Klopp took the opportunity to explain his reasoning behind leaving out the Bayern Munich talent from the initial squad.

While Klopp did not retract his suggestion that Musiala wouldn’t start against Curaçao, he emphasized the need for clarity regarding their decisions. “We were told that there had been some discussion about our lineup choices. I’ve been in a leadership position for 25 years and have worked with people. What you say is important, of course. But it’s much more important that the person you’re addressing understands,” Klopp remarked, addressing the misunderstandings surrounding his comments. He continued, “We want Musiala to play. But he won’t be able to play every game from start to finish. The most important game comes right at the end.”

Klopp further elaborated, stating that the intention was not to criticize Musiala but rather to highlight the variety of options available to the team. He noted that Musiala, who is still developing, hasn’t had sufficient game time recently but is expected to shine during the World Cup. “He’ll have plenty of games now, he can find his feet and have a fantastic World Cup,” he added.

In their unique roles as pundits for the World Cup, Klopp and Müller are tasked with analyzing games and player performances, rather than coaching. The initial strategy behind Musiala’s potential substitution was to utilize him against fatigued opponents, a tactical decision that has drawn scrutiny, particularly from former German star Lothar Matthäus, who criticized the absence of Musiala in the lineup. It remains to be seen how this discussion will unfold when the three meet again.
