⚾GAME OF THE DAY
Matthew Johnson wasn’t nervous to take the mound for Wednesday’s Division III Pod 2 opening round game.
That’s because he didn’t find out he was starting until about 30 minutes before the first pitch.
When Johnson got to news he went to work on getting ready, then went out and chucked for seven straight innings. The Scituate junior kept Tiverton off-balance all afternoon and a two-run single by freshman Tyler Nani provided all the offense needed in a 3-0 win.
The game was moved up from its original 4:30 start to 3:30, which meant Scituate’s players were allowed to leave school early in order to prepare. When Johnson left Scituate High School, he had a feeling he might pitch, but didn’t get the news until he was at the field.
Johnson got off to a rocky start with two first-inning walks, but escaped unscathed. He gave up a leadoff single in the second to Tiverton’s NateCallahan, but finished off the rest of the inning without drama.
All he did after was retired 15 of the final 17 batters, with the other two Tigers reaching on errors.
Scituate wasn’t lighting up the scoreboard against Tiverton started Alex Monkevicz, but got a walk and hit-by-pitch, with both runners moving up on a ground ball.
With two outs, Nani stepped up and punched a fastball to right field, bringing home Aiden Ouillette and Kaleb Baccaire. The Spartans added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI double by Brian Green that brought Drake Dumont home.
Monkevicz was terrific in defeat, throwing six innings of three-hit ball and finishing with 10 strikeouts. Tiverton drops to the losers’ bracket and will travel to play Exeter-West Greenwich on Thursday at a time to be determined.
The win sends Scituate to the Pod 2 winners’ final, where they’ll host No. 7 BVPCF on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Manning Field.
⚾BASEBALL – D-II Pod 2 Losers’ semifinal
Chariho 5, St. Raphael 1
After a tough loss in the opener round, Dominic Andrade wasn’t ready to see his season end and threw seven brilliant innings to lead the Chargers to a 5-1 win over the Saints.
Chariho, the No. 6 seed, suffered a tough loss to third-seeded North Providence on Tuesday and made sure 10th-seeded St. Raphael didn’t have a chance to pull this one out. Andrade stole the show with a three-hit masterpiece in his seven innings of work, giving up one earned run and striking out six.
The Chargers put up runs in the second and third but up 2-1, took a comfortable lead with a three-run fifth started by an RBI single from Leo Emery that was followed by a triple from Landon Sumner and a sacrifice fly by Christian Mancini.
Sumner had the big offensive day, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs. Everett Knerr also had two hits and drove in one in the win, which sends Chariho to the losers’ bracket semifinal in the pod. The Chargers will take on the loser of Thursday’s game between No. 2 West Warwick and No. 3 North Providence.
Jacob Barry wrapped up a solid sophomore campaign for Saints with a 2-for-3 day and the lone run in the season-ending loss.
🥎SOFTBALL - D-I Quarterfinal
Westerly 6, Cranston West 4
Bill Koch's story from the Bulldogs' comeback win over the Falcons is coming soon.
🥍GIRLS LACROSSE - D-II Quarterfinal
Cranston West 10, Narragansett 8
Emily Kodzis led a balanced offensive attack that had answers for everything thrown at them, helping the Falcons come away with a 10-8 win over the Mariners.
No. 5 Narragansett came in confident, having beaten No. 4 Cranston West back on May 11, but the Falcons were ready. West got a great first-half performance from Liliana Ricci and the defense and with goals coming from all over, led 6-3 at the break.
The Mariners weren’t going anywhere and while they mustered up a comeback, Cranston West managed to maintain the lead until the clock ran out on Narragansett.
Kodzis led the Falcons with three goals and Kennedy Carr scored a pair. Talina Barbosa, Nicole Bethune, Ashley Budano, Zoe Budano and Emma Kiley had the other goals.
Ricci finished with 14 saves in the win, which sends Cranston West to next week’s semifinal against No. 1 Westerly.
Teagan Friedt led Narragansett with three goals and Julia Donadio scored twice. Cassidy O’Neill, Sierra Kielty and Allison Fisher had the remaining goals in the season-ending loss.
🎾BOYS TENNIS - D-I Semifinal
Barrington 4, Moses Brown 2
Drama was building, but the Eagles’ No. 3 doubles team of Merritt Birbiglia and Ethan Lepine put an end to any comebacks hopes the Quakers had, earning the clinching point in the 4-3 win.
The teams split their season series and with a spot in the state final on the line, anything could happen.
No. 2 Barrington got off to the start it needed, getting a 6-3, 6-3, win from Henry Stockwell at third singles with Gabe Anderson following with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1. When Wrigley Crocker and Andrew Goblick finished off their 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, the Eagles were flying high.
But No. 3 Moses Brown had plenty of fight left. Axel Lundin started the comeback with his 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles and Coby Weisbord grabbed a three-set thriller over Justin Kuo at No. 2, 3-6, 7-5, 6-5.
The Quakers were battling tough at No. 1 doubles, but Birbiglia and Lepine made sure it didn’t come down to that match, finishing off their 6-1, 6-2 win to send Barrington back to Slater Park.Barrington will go for its three-peat on Saturday when it takes on East Greenwich. The time is still yet to be determined.
East Greenwich 4, Hendricken 0
A dominant performance from its doubles helped the Avengers keep a perfect season going and give them another shot at a state title with a 4-0 win over the Hawks.
Top-seeded East Greenwich was all business against fourth-seeded Hendricken and let their doubles do the talking. The No. 3 team of Kevin Chen and Luke Mendes got the Avengers their first point and a second one was picked up when No. 1 Tate Coker-Dodman earned a win over state runner-up Luca Testa due to an injury default.
East Greenwich was in control at No. 2 singles but trailed on No. 3, but any potential drama was removed with the play from Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. State doubles champions David and Liam Levy grabbed the third point with their 6-1, 6-2 win, and the No. 2 team of Andrew Katz and Floyd Kelly closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
East Greenwich will play in the State Championship match on Saturday at Slater Park against No. 2 Barrington at a time to be determined.
🎾BOYS TENNIS - Division III Semifinal
Warwick 4, Scituate 0
Another big match ended in another big win for undefeated Warwick, as it showed off its balance in a 4-0 win over the Spartans to earn a spot in Saturday’s Division III final.
No. 1 Warwick led 1-0 before a player even stepped on the court thanks to No. 4 Scituate not having a third doubles team.
Warwick didn’t need the advantage. No. 4 Jacob Scott pulled out a 6-0, 6-1 win for the second point and No. 3 Griffin Weldy soon followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win. It was a footrace to the fourth point, with the No. 2 doubles team of Etienne Degos and Ryan DeSilva doing the honors with a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
The win sends Warwick to Slater Park for Saturday’s D-III final against defending champ Providence Country Day. The time on the match is still to be determined.
