Thompson's Clutch Hit Secures Rockies' 3-2 Win Over Cubs
DENVER (AP) — In a thrilling finish, Sterlin Thompson delivered a crucial pinch-hit single off Daniel Palencia’s blazing 100-mph fastball in the ninth inning, leading the Colorado Rockies to a 3-2 win against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. This marked the 24-year-old rookie’s seventh career RBI, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.
Thompson's decisive single to right field came with runners on first and third and no outs, just after Ian Happ had tied the game with a remarkable 424-foot solo home run off Antonio Senzatela in the top of the ninth. This was Happ's 15th home run of the season, making him the team leader in that category.
Earlier in the game, TJ Rumfield contributed significantly for Colorado, hitting a two-run homer in the eighth inning to put the Rockies ahead 2-1. Remarkably, this was Rumfield’s eighth home run of the season, especially notable as he had only managed one homer in his last 22 games.
Despite a blown save opportunity, Senzatela (6-0) earned the victory, while Palencia (1-1) took the loss. Chicago's Pete Crow-Armstrong tripled in the fourth inning and scored, extending his on-base streak to 14 games with a batting average of .356 during this time. The Cubs have struggled recently, losing 22 of their last 29 contests after a strong start.
On the mound, Rockies starter Michael Lorenzen had an impressive performance, allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out a season-high seven batters over five innings. This was a significant improvement, as he had given up 22 earned runs in his previous four starts. Meanwhile, Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga threw five scoreless innings, surrendering only two hits and adding seven strikeouts to his tally.
Looking ahead, the series finale will feature Cubs right-hander Edward Cabrera (3-3, 4.99 ERA) facing Rockies right-hander Ryan Feltner (2-1, 4.22) on Thursday.
