Tigers Dominate Rays Again; Flaherty Secures First Win After Tough Start

St. Petersburg, Fla. - A light-hearted note in the pre-game details caught attention on Tuesday, highlighting the Tigers' impressive .821 slugging percentage, the highest in the league, alongside their American League-leading 1.239 OPS for June. Was this merely playful banter or an omen of things to come? The answer became clear as the Tigers showcased their prowess on the field during the second day of the month.

The Tigers unleashed a flurry of offense against left-hander Steven Matz, cruising to an 8-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. This win marked the end of an eight-series losing streak and their first road series triumph since early in the season when they took two of three against San Diego.

Gleyber Torres, returning from the injured list, kicked off the scoring with a spectacular 433-foot home run to start the game. Following his lead, Matt Vierling tripled, and Dillon Dingler brought him home with a sacrifice fly. The impressive exit velocities of those hits were 106.3 mph, 102 mph, and 102.1 mph, respectively. In the second inning, Spencer Torkelson doubled, while Wenceel Perez added a 404-foot homer, extending the Tigers’ lead to 5-0 and chasing Matz from the game.

The Tigers recorded nine hits off Matz, averaging an impressive exit velocity of 99.8 mph, which included six extra-base hits. Torkelson contributed with a double, a single, a walk, and two runs scored, while Perez had two hits, two RBIs, and two runs. Short, batting ninth, added to the offense with a double, a single, and a sacrifice fly, and Vierling knocked in two runs with two hits.

Riley Greene also continued his hot streak, hitting a home run for the second consecutive game in the seventh inning, marking his sixth of the season. The Tigers smashed eight home runs in the first two games of the series, bringing their total to 51 in the first 60 games of the season. The game even saw the Rays resort to using a position player, shortstop Ben Williamson, to pitch the ninth inning, though this time, the game remained drama-free.

Jack Flaherty, who had previously endured a rough start to the season with seven consecutive losses, finally earned his first win. He pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just five hits and striking out six. Despite facing challenges, he managed to escape trouble effectively, showcasing his skills with a sharp 2-2 knuckle-curve to end the inning with two runners on base.
