Tigers Dominate Rays to Capture Second Straight Victory

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – The Detroit Tigers celebrated their first series win in nearly a month with an emphatic 8-0 triumph over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday, June 2. This victory marked the Tigers' second consecutive win, a feat they hadn't accomplished since early May.

Right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty delivered a standout performance, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing just five hits and two walks, along with six strikeouts. This outing not only showcased his skills but also allowed him to secure his first win since September 10, 2025, bringing his record to 1-7 this season. The Tigers, who had struggled offensively in May, have now scored 18 runs over their last two games in June—an impressive turnaround from their average of 2.89 runs per game in the previous month.

Flaherty's strong showing was complemented by the return of second baseman Gleyber Torres, who marked his comeback from the injured list with a leadoff home run. The Tigers quickly built a 5-0 lead, chasing left-hander Steven Matz after just two innings. The offense was relentless, averaging 99.8 mph in exit velocity on balls in play against Matz.

The Tigers continued to pile on the runs, with additional scores coming from sacrifice flies and a solo home run from Riley Greene in the seventh inning. Greene’s shot barely cleared the right-field wall, extending the lead to 8-0. The Tigers' pitching staff, led by Flaherty and followed by Enmanuel De Jesus, held the Rays scoreless for the entire game, with De Jesus earning his first career save.
