Tigers Power Past Twins with Four Home Runs in Rain-Delayed Opener

Detroit — A humid and rainy evening at Comerica Park set the stage for a thrilling matchup as the Tigers faced off against the Twins. Both teams, known for their average home run power in the American League, combined to hit eight homers in this exciting game.

Kerry Carpenter kicked off the fireworks with a two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Tigers a 5-4 lead. Dillon Dingler then added to the excitement with a two-out, three-run shot in the sixth inning, marking his second homer of the night and sealing a 10-4 victory for Detroit in the first of a three-game series. The Tigers (28-39) have now secured six wins in their last seven games this month. Dingler’s impressive night included four hits and four RBIs, as he belted his 15th and 16th home runs during the game. Riley Greene also contributed with a seventh homer, sending a ball just around the foul pole in left field.

Dingler's second home run came off Twins’ reliever Taylor Rogers, who was brought in to face rookie Kevin McGonigle but faced the consequence of facing Dingler as well. Since May 16, Dingler has been on fire, hitting seven home runs, tying him with Houston’s Yordan Alvarez for the most in the league during that timeframe.

Detroit’s Troy Melton struggled on the mound, allowing solo home runs to Byron Buxton, Josh Bell, Brooks Lee, and former Tiger Kody Clemens. The first pitch of the game was sent soaring 428 feet by Buxton, marking the first of many tense moments for Melton, who lasted five innings while allowing base runners throughout. However, the Tigers' bullpen stepped up, with Drew Anderson and Kyle Finnegan making crucial strikeouts to maintain the lead.

The Tigers capitalized on three walks in the seventh inning, adding two more runs thanks to a two-run single from Gleyber Torres. A rain delay of an hour and 51 minutes at the start of the game added an unusual element to the evening's proceedings, but the Tigers ultimately triumphed in this high-scoring affair.
