Timberwolves Eye Trade for Grizzlies Star Amid Roster Adjustments
The Minnesota Timberwolves managed to defeat the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs, but their journey ended in the Western Conference Semifinals at the hands of the San Antonio Spurs. This marks the third consecutive season the Timberwolves have advanced past the first round yet failed to reach the NBA Finals.
According to Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report, the Timberwolves may be looking to trade a declining former Los Angeles Lakers forward for a star guard from the Memphis Grizzlies, potentially setting the stage for a championship bid in the upcoming 2026-27 season. “Alternate versions of this deal exist where the Wolves give up more usable pieces in place of (Donte) DiVincenzo, with Joan Beringer and Terrence Shannon Jr. heading to Memphis,” Hughes explained. He noted that while such a package might seem excessive, it reflects the Timberwolves' urgent desire to enhance their roster.
Hughes highlighted the Timberwolves’ ambitions, stating, “This is a winning organization looking to improve itself after failing to make a third straight Western Conference Finals.” He added that taking a chance on Grizzlies' star Ja Morant could be risky for a team that has much to lose, particularly if it involves sacrificing multiple rotation players with significant potential.
The proposed trade would see Minnesota part ways with Julius Randle, who struggled to find his rhythm alongside Anthony Edwards during the playoffs, and DiVincenzo, who is set to miss the entire next season due to injury. While the deal may not be the most attractive Memphis could receive, it appears to be a reasonable offer for Minnesota.
Off the court, Morant's future has been clouded by various issues, including multiple suspensions and injuries, which limited him to just 20 games last season. Averaging 19.5 points and 8.1 assists, his shooting performance has raised concerns. However, Hughes believes a fresh start could benefit Morant, particularly considering Randle's recent struggles. Morant's explosive athleticism remains a significant asset, making him a worthwhile gamble despite his ongoing shooting challenges.
