The 2007 draft has to be one of the most resilient in league history. They still have a star in Kevin Durant, a great drop defender through Al Horford, and a serviceable veteran wing because of Jeff Green. After the 2026 NBA Playoffs, a lot of rumors swirled about one other member of the draft class, Mike Conley. Will he finally go into retirement or make the Minnesota Timberwolves led by Coach Chris Finch and Anthony Edwards happy by staying?
Conley wants to run it back with Timberwolves, refutes retirement rumors
By the early days of next season, Mike Conley will be about 39 years old already. In decades past, this usually meant that a player was having their swan song and would not get much playing time in big moments like the NBA Playoffs. This might not be the case for the Timberwolves veteran. He outlined his desire to stay was because of having more left in the tank, via Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.
"I think I might have proven to myself that I can keep playing a little bit longer. But who knows what that looks like. It just was a lot to soak up and try to figure my way through it, because you just didn’t know when opportunity would be there or when you’d get a chance. Just tried to stay ready through it all," Conley said.
The Timberwolves used Conley as a secondary ballhandler throughout their recent NBA Playoffs run. In his 19th year in the league, he was still able to play 12 games and even start in five of them. Moreover, his work as a floor general has been very beneficial for young talents like Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels.
It is no surprise that he has found a home in the Timberwolves system for the past four seasons. Will they pull him out of free agency and re-sign him?
