Garrett Cox celebrated his return to Lake of the Woods Golf Course by teaming with Lyle Burns to win last month's Ben Sieg 2-Person Season Opener Tournament.
A member of Mahomet-Seymour's state championship golf team in 2010, the 31-year-old Cox moved to Charlotte, N.C., eight years ago. He usually comes home for an M-S fundraiser each July, but with his wife, Amanda, expecting the couple's first child in August — it's a girl — he likely will miss the event this summer.
"I love going back there," said Cox, a sales rep for TaylorMade Golf. "Lyle's my best friend and it was cool to team up with him and spend the weekend with his family."
Here's more:
Best memory of the state title season: "Coach (Nathan) Mills used to drive our short mini-bus, and we'd all be singing or rapping songs after each tournament."
Where's your IHSA medal? "My mom made a shadow box with it and a photo of me and the leaderboard. It's in my attic. It might be time to move it to my office."
Favorite golf movie: "Happy Gilmore."
Order on the 19th hole: Guinness.
Go-to club: TaylorMade 5-wood.
Favorite course: Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.
Low round: 65 at Lake of the Woods.
Pro I root for: Rory McIlroy.
