Toronto Blue Jays Ace Heading to Injured List

The Toronto Blue Jays injury troubles don't seem to be turning around any time soon.

Blue Jays starting pitcher Dylan Cease was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday due to a left hamstring strain.

Cease exited a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth inning Sunday. Toronto ultimately lost the game 4-1.

The 30-year-old righty finished Sunday's game against Pittsburgh with eight strikeouts, one walk and two earned runs allowed on four hits (two home runs) in 4.2 innings pitched before his early exit.

Before the Blue Jays' game against the Miami Marlins on Monday, the organization brought up right-handed pitcher Tanner Andrews in a corresponding move to Cease being placed on the IL.

Andrews' first appearance with Toronto will mark his major league debut.

Cease was the crown jewel of the Blue Jays' offseason and was signed to a seven-year, $210 million contract.

Since joining Toronto, Cease has proved to be worth every dollar. Following his exit against the Pirates, he's posted a 3.05 ERA and has struck out 92 batters in 62 innings pitched across 11 starts.

Entering Monday, Cease's 92 fanned batters was first in the American League and second in the majors behind Milwaukee Brewers starter Jacob Misiorowski (100).

Cease's placement on the IL is the latest in a string of injuries not only for the team at-large, but the starting rotation specifically.

Including Cease, six members of Toronto's rotation are either currently out or have missed time this season. The other five ailing starters are: Max Scherzer, Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios, Shane Bieber and Cody Ponce. Yesavage has since returned to the team where as Berrios, Scherzer and Ponce are all out. Ponce will be out for the rest of the season due surgery to repair a sprained ACL he suffered in his first start of the year March 30.

The Blue Jays also have a seventh starting pitcher, Eric Lauer, who was designated for assignment and picked up by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

With the litany of injuries the rotation has had and Lauer's jettison, Kevin Gausman is the only starter from the Opening Day rotation that is either not injured or still with the team.

Toronto, which entered the season with legitimate World Series aspirations after making its first World Series since 1993, entered Monday 25-28 and in third place in the American League West. The Blue Jays were 10 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the division.

Toronto will be looking for a starter to fill in for Cease's next turn in the rotation against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday.
