Trent Williams of the 49ers Contemplates Retirement After Upcoming Season

The San Francisco 49ers can count on All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams for at least the upcoming season, following the signing of a lucrative two-year deal worth $50 million. At 37 years old, Williams, who was selected as a first-round pick by the Washington Commanders in 2010, has been an integral part of the 49ers' offensive line since joining the franchise in 2020.

In a recent statement to the media, Williams indicated that he is likely to retire after the 2026 season, expressing a desire to spend more time with his family. “I’m toying between the idea of going until I can’t no more and just leaving while I’ve still got some good product left and I get ran out of the league,” he said, according to Pro Football Talk. Reflecting on his long career, he noted, “I had a daughter that she was born three months before I got drafted, so I’m going on year 17 and she’s turning 17. As a father, you feel like I’ve kind of felt like I missed her whole life.”

Despite his age, Williams continues to demonstrate elite performance, having earned his 12th Pro Bowl nomination last season. He aims to maximize his contributions during what might be his final year in the NFL. “There’s little stuff I’ve got to think about,” he stated. “Obviously, I can’t tell the future. I don’t know. I’m still a competitor. It’s hard not to compete when you can, so we’ll see.”

In anticipation of his eventual retirement, the 49ers have begun strategizing for the future of the left tackle position. This offseason, they signed Vederian Lowe to a two-year contract, who is expected to serve as a swing tackle alongside Colton McKivitz this season. Additionally, the team selected Enrique Cruz from Kansas in the fifth round of April’s draft, providing further depth for the left tackle spot as they look beyond 2026.

Replacing a player of Williams' caliber will undoubtedly be a challenge for the 49ers when the time comes for him to step away from the game.
